Welcome to Alatus Nox
Behold the curse of eternal night...
Behold the curse of eternal night...
Hello everyone! My name is Capella and I'd like to welcome you to a "night creature" roleplay board! Thank you so much for your interest! Below are the rules and basic info about the setting to help you decide if this is the board for you!
First off, I'm the head admin here, but I don't do it alone! The other wonderful people that make up the staff team are Silence and Finny. They have been here through thick and thin, and alongside myself, will be there for any of your questions or concerns.
Now, without further ado, here are the rules! Don't be intimidated!
The Nox Contract
Out-of-Character -
- Just be cool. That's really all there is to our biggest, most important rule. Be a nice person. People who aren't nice will be made to leave. Our goal is for this to be a friendly, welcoming, and inspiring community.
- Please, no double posting or bumping. This is a pretty small community, so most threads are really not in any danger of getting pushed off the first page and getting ignored. If your post was the last one made in a particular thread and you have something else you'd like to add or change, please use the edit-post function.
In Character -
- Write to grow, not to win. Roleplaying here is not about "winning", being the best on the board, or killing off other characters. Here, it's about the growth of your character and the development of their story. No character knows everything, and there's a lot that they can learn from a loss and/or from being humbled. So, be here for the love of a good story, not for the competition! (This does not mean that it isn't okay to win from time to time, too! But don't be afraid to lose!)
- Consult your roleplaying partners! Killing (or another severe action) other characters is not allowed unless it is agreed upon by all involved members!
- Powerplaying and God-Modding is not allowed. Since not everyone knows what that means, I made a separate post about it here. If those two terms confuse you at all, please click on the link!
- We have no word-count, but give it your all! There are times when a 1-2 sentence reply is perfectly appropriate, and there are times when the only way to get a point across is with a carefully written 5+ paragraph response. You'll likely experience all parts of the spectrum, here! We all have different methods and levels of inspiration and creative energy, so as long as your post both 1) moves the action/story along somehow, and 2) gives your partner(s) a way to respond, pretty much any post length is allowed.
- One character per account. I know this is a gripe for some, but it's worked out quite well for us in the past, and that's how we're going to keep doing things. Fortunately, Proboards has a "global" account per e-mail, so now it's easier than ever to switch between character accounts if you use the same e-mail for them!
- Keep it PG13! This is in the Proboards TOS. They are pretty lax on violence and language, but they monitor sexual content faithfully. Please be smart and don't post sexual content. I haven't paid for the R rating and don't plan to, lol.
And of course, have a great time!
So now that we have those out of the way, let's get down to some setting information to help you settle in!
"Alatus Nox" is, for all intents and purposes, a dimension or "realm" all its own, laid out as a trap by the land's nomads some 490 years ago. There are pockets all around the world where the veils between realms are thin enough to lead to Alatus Nox, so people who wound up here could be from anywhere! The curse on Alatus Nox is that once inside the dimension, it is thus far inescapable, and the sun never rises.
No one is sure how the plants keep growing or how the ecosystem hasn't crashed, but the standing theory so far is that it has something to do with the mysterious glowing Genesis Tree.
The time period is a form of the medieval era. Burning wood is the usual method for warmth and energy. Light generally comes from candles, oil lamps, or magic. The fanciest and richest places of all might have rudimentary plumbing. There is a slight colonial twist in that guns do exist. They are very clumsy weapons being developed by dwarves. They take a long time to load, they are inaccurate, they are extremely prone to misfires, and are all around still a danger to everyone friend or foe.
It is common knowledge that Alatus Nox is overseen by its governess, an old vampire named Capella, who lives in Vita Manor with other trusted individuals. At the other end of the region, deep in the Forest of Proverbs, is an old squalid place called the Castle of Magdalene, where the deadly Hunters reside, plotting to kill any and all "creatures of Chaos".

And there you have it! Those are the basics! There is of course a lot of fun, supplementary threads if you'd like to brush up, but this is all you need to begin your character's journey here!
